How to Hide Apps on Android Without Third-Party Tools

Sometimes you hand your phone to a friend, a child, or a coworker and wish a few apps were out of sight. Maybe it is a banking app, a private chat, or just clutter you never use. Many people search for “hide apps android without apps” because they do not want to install yet another download just to tidy their screen. The good news is that Android already has several built-in ways to do this, and this guide explains each one in plain language.

Why Use Built-In Tools Instead of Extra Apps

App-hiding tools from the app store can work, but they often ask for wide permissions. A permission is simply access you give an app, such as reading your notifications or seeing your other apps. The more access you hand out, the more you have to trust the company behind it.

Built-in features come with your phone’s system, so they do not add new risks. They also get security fixes through normal system updates. On top of that, they do not show ads or slow your phone down in the background.

That said, some helper apps are genuinely useful for other jobs. If you are curious about safe, lightweight tools for cleaning, file handling, and more, our guide to the best free Android utility apps is a good place to start.

First, Know Which Android Version You Have

The options you see depend on your Android version and on the company that made your phone. Phone makers often add their own menus on top of Android, so the same feature can have a different name from one phone to another.

  • Open Settings.
  • Scroll down and tap About phone.
  • Look for Android version, which may sit inside a “Software information” section.

If a menu named in this guide is missing, use the search bar at the top of Settings. Typing words like “hide,” “private,” or “secure folder” usually takes you straight to the right page.

Method 1: Use Private Space (Android 15 and Newer)

Private Space is the strongest built-in option on newer phones. It creates a separate, locked area inside your phone where you can install apps. Those apps do not show up in your normal app list, recent apps screen, or notifications while the space is locked.

  • Open Settings and tap Security & privacy.
  • Tap Private space and confirm with your screen lock.
  • Follow the setup steps. You can choose a separate lock just for this space.
  • Install the apps you want to keep private from inside the space.

To open it later, scroll to the bottom of your app drawer, which is the screen that lists all your apps. Tap the Private Space section and unlock it. On some phones you can also hide the entry point so it only appears when you search for it.

One thing to keep in mind is that apps inside Private Space are separate copies. If you already have a chat app in your main area, you will need to sign in again inside the private one.

Method 2: Use Your Phone’s Secure Folder

Many phone makers offered their own private area long before Private Space existed. It is often called Secure Folder, App Vault, Private Safe, or something similar. It works much like Private Space: a locked, separate zone with its own apps and files.

  • Search Settings for “secure folder” or “private.”
  • Turn the feature on and set a PIN, pattern, password, or fingerprint.
  • Open the folder and tap the plus (+) icon to add apps.
  • In the folder’s settings, look for an option to hide its icon from the home screen.

Some versions need you to sign in with an account from your phone maker. This is used to help you recover the folder if you forget the lock, so pick a lock you will remember.

Method 3: Hide Apps in Your Home Screen Settings

The launcher is the part of Android that draws your home screen and app drawer. Many built-in launchers include a simple “Hide apps” option. This removes icons from view without moving or locking the apps.

  • Press and hold an empty spot on your home screen.
  • Tap Settings or Home screen settings.
  • Look for Hide apps or Hide apps on Home and Apps screens.
  • Tick the apps you want to hide and tap Done.

This is the quickest method, but it is also the lightest. Anyone can still find the app through Settings, and on some phones it still appears in search. Think of it as tidying up, not locking a door.

Method 4: Disable Pre-Installed Apps You Never Use

Phones often arrive with apps you cannot uninstall. These are sometimes called “bloatware.” You may not be able to remove them, but you can usually disable them, which hides them and stops them from running.

  • Go to Settings and tap Apps.
  • Choose the app you want to hide.
  • Tap Disable and confirm.

Be careful with system apps that have technical names you do not recognize. Disabling the wrong one can break features like messages or the camera. Stick to apps you clearly know, such as an extra music player or a game demo.

Method 5: Create a Guest or Second User

If you often lend your phone to someone, a guest profile can be better than hiding single apps. A guest user gets a clean, fresh phone layout with none of your apps, photos, or accounts.

  • Open Settings and search for Multiple users.
  • Turn the feature on.
  • Tap Add guest or Add user.
  • Switch users from the quick settings panel when you hand over the phone.

Not every phone includes this feature, especially some budget models. When it is there, though, it is one of the safest ways to share a device without sharing your private life.

Simple Tricks That Help Keep Apps Out of Sight

Not every situation needs a locked area. Sometimes you only want fewer eyes landing on a certain icon. These small habits work on almost any Android phone.

  • Remove the icon from the home screen. Press and hold the icon and choose “Remove” (not “Uninstall”). The app stays in your app drawer only.
  • Use a plain folder. Put private apps inside a folder with a dull name like “Tools” on your last home screen page.
  • Hide notification content. In Settings, go to Notifications and choose to hide sensitive content on the lock screen.
  • Use app pinning. Search Settings for “app pinning.” It locks the screen to one app, so a borrower cannot wander into others.

App pinning is especially handy when a child wants to play one game. Once it is on, they need your screen lock to leave the app.

Which Method Should You Choose?

The right choice depends on what you are trying to protect. Ask yourself whether you want privacy, security, or simply a cleaner screen.

  • For real privacy: Use Private Space or your phone’s Secure Folder. Both are locked and separate.
  • For a tidier screen: Use the launcher’s Hide apps option or remove icons from the home screen.
  • For unwanted pre-installed apps: Disable them in Settings.
  • For sharing your phone: Use a guest user or app pinning.

You can also mix methods. For example, keep banking apps in Private Space and use the launcher to hide games you only open on weekends.

Important Limits to Keep in Mind

Hiding an app is not the same as deleting it. The app still uses storage, and it may still run in the background unless it is disabled or locked away. Your app store account may also list it in your library of installed apps.

No hiding method is useful if your phone has no screen lock. Set a strong PIN, password, or fingerprint first. Without it, anyone holding your phone can open Settings and undo your changes in seconds.

Finally, keep your phone updated. Security fixes protect the private areas described here. When you do decide to add extra tools for other tasks, compare their permissions, update history, and privacy policy, and check our list of the best free Android utility apps for well-behaved options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I hide apps on Android without installing anything?

Yes. Most Android phones include at least one built-in option, such as Private Space, a Secure Folder, or a Hide apps setting in the home screen menu. Search your Settings for “hide” or “private” to find what your phone offers.

Will hidden apps still send me notifications?

It depends on the method. Apps hidden with the launcher still send normal notifications. Apps inside a locked Private Space or Secure Folder usually stay quiet until you unlock that space.

How do I find an app I hid earlier?

Go back to the same menu you used to hide it and remove the tick next to the app. You can also open Settings, tap Apps, and find it in the full list. Apps in a private area appear once you unlock that area.

Is disabling an app the same as uninstalling it?

No. Disabling hides the app and stops it from running, but the original version stays on your phone. You can turn it back on at any time from the Apps section in Settings.

What if my phone does not have Private Space or Secure Folder?

Older or lower-cost phones may lack these features. In that case, use the launcher’s hide option, remove icons from the home screen, or set up a guest user. Checking for a system update may also unlock newer privacy tools.
